Ex-libris da cidade do Porto, a Torre dos Clérigos, projetada pelo arquiteto toscano Nicolau Nasoni a pedido da Irmandade dos Clérigos Pobres, começou a ser erigida em 1754, dando origem uma obra imponente, com os seus 240 degraus, 6 andares e 75 metros de altura, concluída em 1763.
Quando se comemoram os 250 anos da Torre dos Clérigos, atualmente classificada como monumento nacional e considerada uma obra emblemática do estilo Barroco em Portugal, a INCM assinala esse marco histórico com a emissão de uma moeda corrente comemorativa de 2 Euro.
A moeda apresenta uma criação do escultor Hugo Maciel, com a Torre dos Clérigos em perspetiva e, num segundo plano, a cidade do Porto vista do rio.

No ano em que a Série Europa é dedicada aos «Escritores Europeus», a Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda presta homenagem a José Saramago, um dos autores portugueses mais aclamados, com uma moeda da autoria do escultor Vitor Santos.

O anverso da moeda exibe uma representação estilizada do rosto de José Saramago, surgindo no reverso o valor facial e uma alusão ao Prémio Nobel da Literatura, galardão atribuído ao escritor pela Academia Sueca em 1998.

A moeda recria o Morabitino de ouro batido em Braga ou em Lisboa no reinado de D. Sancho II (1223-1248), de que se conhece apenas um exemplar, pertencente ao Museu Numismático Português, sendo hoje considerado um dos mais importantes numismáticos.

The ‘New Austrian Tunnelling Method’, which uses the geographical stress of surrounding rock to strengthen a tunnel, was developed from 1957 to 1965 and has since done a great deal to revolutionize tunnel construction around the world.

The coin features a present-day tunnel boring machine positioned within the ice blue niobium core. The outer silver ring shows the mountains that this engineering wonder cuts through. The reverse design shows a road tunnel within Austria’s alpine landscape. The silver ring contains an image of a worker using a drill to loosen rock. The word “Tunnelbau” (tunnel construction) appears at the base.

A moeda apresenta no anverso, no campo central, as armas nacionais de Portugal circundadas pela legenda «República Portuguesa» e o valor facial de «10 euro», orladas pelas armas nacionais dos restantes países participantes nesta série internacional; no reverso é apresentada uma composição de vários elementos que simbolizam o «Tempo dos Descobrimentos» e as novas tecnologias na comunicação, no campo superior figuram uma representação de umas ondas hertzianas e de um avião, no campo central entre a península ibérica e o continente sul-americano surge a era e uma vela de nau rodeada por ondas e na orla inferior inscreve-se a legenda «XX Aniversário Série “Ibero-Americana”».

The obverse of the coin features the image of a tree set with the vibrant blue niobium, used to represent all the vegetation in the world. Coming out of the tree is a spiral design reflecting the continuous cycle of the world's four elements: Earth, Wind, Water and Fire. These are represented along the spiral as follows: Fire (the sun in the backgroud providing photosynthesis); Wind (the leaves blowing to the ground); Earth (giving the tree nourishment as well as recycling the fallen leaves); and Water (stylised at the bottom of the outer silver ring, allowing the tree to absord nutrients). The top of the outer silver ring includes inscriptions for the country of issue and nominal face value. The design was created by Helmut Andexlinger and inspired by the theme to "represent the living, breathing system of plants".

The reverse design features several types of renewable energy that are in use today. The Earth is depicted at the center as a stylized with each form of the renewable energy following the same pattern of four elements. Fire is represented by the sun's rays being captured by solar panels and converted into energy; water is driving the hydroelectric water turbine; geothermal heat sources of the Earth are recovered as steam (represented by the two arrows and droplets of water on the left side of the design); and wind is converted to energy by the large wind turbine in the upper left of the coin. Inscribed at the bottom of the coin are the words "Erneuerbare Energie" (translated: "Renewable Energy").
