Em 2014 comemora-se o 40.º aniversário daquela que ficou conhecida como a «Revolução dos Cravos», que pôs termo a um longo regime ditatorial e fez nascer a atual democracia portuguesa.
A INCM assinala este marco histórico com uma moeda corrente comemorativa de 2 Euro, da autoria do escultor José Teixeira, que desenhou na face nacional um cravo estilizado, sobre o qual inscreveu a legenda «25 de ABRIL», estabelecendo uma ponte entre os dois regimes, com a letra «R» ao centro, em primeiro plano, correspondendo ao primeiro sinal da Revolução.

Symbolising the origin of Evolution as a whole, an image of the DNA molecule, also known as deoxyribonucleic acid, graces the coin’s obverse. A debate still continues about who exactly should be credited with decoding the molecule, but Francis Crick, James D. Watson and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for their work in this field. The coin’s reverse deals with the history of human development and the diversity of forms of life brought about by evolution, with the design making splendid use of the coin’s outer silver ring and inner niobium pill to do so.

Com o intuito de colocar em evidência alguns elementos da cultura tradicional e popular que compõem a nossa identidade, a INCM, em colaboração com o Museu Nacional de Etnologia, decidiu dar início a uma nova série de moedas de coleção intitulada «Etnografia Portuguesa».
A primeira moeda desta série, da autoria da escultora Eloísa Byrne, é dedicada às «Arrecadas de Viana do Castelo», peças da ourivesaria tradicional portuguesa em filigrana cujas origens se perdem no tempo, imprescindíveis na ornamentação do traje popular das noivas minhotas.
